Biography

 

Lyric soprano Laura Maria Reyes has an exciting 2014-2015 season debuting the roles of Almirena in Handel’s Rinaldo, Cio-Cio San in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Norma in Bellini’s Norma, Chrysothemis in Strauss’ Elektra and Elettra in Mozart’s Idomeneo. 

Laura Maria Reyes captivates audiences with her sumptuous voice, and compelling stage presence. She debuted The Empty Hours in Sao Paulo, Brazil in Summer 2014 and was invited to perform a recital and a Master Class for Sao Paulo’s Conservatory Opera Singers. 

Laura Maria Reyes, former Resident Artist of the Bavarian State Opera House in Munich, Germany has sung with Patricia Racette, Marcello Giordani, Ana María Martínez, Justino Díaz, Kent Nagano, among others. 

In 2003, the Metropolitan Opera National Competition awarded Ms. Reyes the Gulf Region winner and semifinalist in New York City.  

Ms. Reyes has toured Puerto Rico, United States, Central America, South America, Spain, Israel and Germany singing a vast repertoire between opera, musical theatre and popular songs. An avid songwriter herself, Ms. Reyes has been awarded by ASCAP as Best Latin Music Songwriter of the year (2000).  She has written two musicals: The Christmas Story and The Passion of the Ages and both have been debuted by One Stage Theatre in Puerto Rico.

During 2013-2014 season, Laura Maria Reyes performed Najade in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and Princess Azema in Rossini’s Semiramide both in Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium, plus debuted The Empty Hours in Brasil with great acclaim.

Ms. Reyes has performed the roles of: Mimì in La Bohème, Despina in Così Fan Tutte,  Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Morgana in Alcina, Suzel in L’Amico Fritz, Miss Jessel in The Turn of the Screw, Lucy in The Telephone, Laeticia in The old maid and the thief, Carolina in Il Matrimonio Segreto, and the Countess in Luisa Fernanda among others. 

Laura Maria Reyes has a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance from The Curtis Institute of Music.

Ms. Reyes teaches voice technique and songwriting. She is an instructor at Rutgers University and Life is Precious. She has taught at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, University of the Virgin Islands, and San Juan Children’s Choir, and has directed many choirs. She has worked with Paul Simon, José Feliciano, Jon Lucien, Marc Anthony, Danilo Pérez, cuban tres player Nelson González, Ricardo Arjona, La India, Danny Rivera, among others.
